| RATED R Rated R, reigning Canadian mixtape DJ, started on turntables at only 12
years old by accident..or fate.
Showing much promise with his raw talent, Rated R was introduced to the
turntables by Kid Kut(The international Baby Blu Sound Crew), who
inspired Rated R to pursue a career as a DJ. In 1996, R (formally known as
Lil' Versatile) was instrumental in a local single vinyl release that
printed 1,500 copies peaking in the top-twenty of Canadian radio spins. R networked his way to radio and, without any on-air experience,
started to play on Lamont Hawk's show "Constant Movement" (89.5FM). He
created a fan base with just a few sets, which fueled R to take himself
seriously. Within months, R started on the late night show Project
Bounce(89.5) with a recommendation from " P" of the World-Famous Elite Squad.
While filling in for other DJ's, the listenership of 180,000 followed R's
every move. As one of the
youngest DJ's to be on Project Bounce he
clocked 256 hours of on-air time and over 300 hours of
programming/preparation throughout his fill-in gigs and his own Project Bounce shows; Mix
Show Massacre and Feature Presentation with Trixxx(Flow 93.5). This was all he needed to create a world-platform for himself. In 2004, he started releasing mixtapes internationally with DJ
Diggz(New Jersey). Both the streets and the music-elite combined paid
attention, which gained the duo distribution from NYC-based Gutter Musik.
Forwarding to three years later, they drop exclusive mixtapes on almost
a bi-weekly basis which have been hosted by notable names including DJ
Big Mike, Mobb Deep, Theodore Unit(Ghostface), Infamous Mobb and
D-Block and reviewed on RapMullet.com.
These are all available in every music fan's collection and on various
international websites, including TapeStreet.com and legendary
mixunit.com R has placed himself in a position to bridge a definite
American-Canadian music gap and the world is starting to catch on. In 2006, he won the
Justo Mixtape Award for Best Canadian Mixtape DJ, the first time the
category existed.
He is currently working on a DVD and is co-hosting Canada's longest
running hip-hop radio show; The Masterplan(89.5FM). With label reps watching, hip-hop heads listening and haters taking-notes, R has nothing to prove to anyone; he lets the music speak and watches the rest take care of itself. |
